Queensland Wetlands Program excursion

In 2007, Townsville Central State School year 7 students went on a wetland adventure as part of an innovative new curriculum developed by the school and the Queensland Wetlands Program.

The students spent two days canoeing along Stuart Creek in Townsville.

The excursion was the final component of the curriculum, which involved the studying wetlands intensively for 10-weeks. They put their knowledge to the test during the trip, undertaking water sampling and evaluating land-use issues.

The Queensland Wetlands Program, which is a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland governments to protect wetlands throughout Queensland, funded an additional two schools to pilot the curriculum in 2008. These schools are Tewantin State School near Noosa, and Rasmussen State School in Townsville.
