Indicators in Reduction in Soils

The Indicator of Reduction in Soils or IRIS method was developed in the USA (Castenson & Rabenhorst 2006, Jenkinson & Franzmeier 2006, Rabenhorst & Burch 2006) and involves the use of synthetic iron oxides to indicate the presence of reducing conditions in soils. The method is used to determine whether a soil is in a reduced state without relying on less definitive visual soil indicators or using expensive equipment which is time consuming.
