Condition - Litter (Rubbish)

Physical-chemical state

Changes to the rubbish load entering a wetland can affect:

  • Rubbish presence

The amount of litter present (standing stock) and the rate of its accumulation are the important aspects of the state of a wetlands in regard to the presence of rubbish. Rubbish in wetlands detracts from aesthetic values.

Physical-chemical state indicators
Condition indicator: standing stock of litter (rubbish)
Condition indicator: litter (rubbish) accumulation rate

Biological impact

Changes to the presence of rubbish within a wetland can result in:

  • A loss of individual plants or animals

Rubbish can impact animals as they consume it (e.g. plastic, cigarette butts) or get caught up in it (e.g. discarded fishing equipment). This may result in harm or even death. Rubbish can also physically impact plants.
