Pressure - Bacteria/Pathogens

Sources of bacteria/pathogens:

  • Mammal derived bacteria/pathogens are sourced from urban areas; septic tanks/on-site STPs; stormwater run-off; sewage treatment plants (STPs); STP pump station overflows or from the local (watershed) catchment
  • Native and livestock/domesticated/pest animals can be a major source of bacteria/pathogens (dogs are known to be a major source in urban areas)
  • Intensive animal production, such as dairies, feed lots, abattoirs and aquaculture facilities, can be a source of bacteria/pathogens
  • Bacteria/pathogens are present in the water column and in sediments

Pressure (Source) indicators
Pressure indicator:% of wetland disturbed by livestock and feral pigs
Pressure indicator: number of storm water inflows per km2 wetland
Pressure indicator: presence of aquaculture facilities
Pressure indicator:% of catchment under intensive animal production
Pressure indicator:% of wetland adjoining urban land-use
Pressure indicator: frequency of sewage overflow events
Pressure indicator: level of sewage treatment plant wastewater disinfection
Pressure indicator: density of septics within a 200 m buffer of the wetland
